JoinWell: Why do governments spend public money on blockchain healthcare initiatives?blockchain
The health system has went through profound changes in the 21st century. There are many reasons for that, such as breakthrough discoveries, a new way of providing medical assistance, higher level of technical ability. Right now we can see how absolutely new era of healthcare is coming. Healthcare on blockchain.
There are plenty of opportunities to leverage blockchain technology in it. From medical records to payment distribution. And this leverage is happening on the government level. This is happening because blockchain has a number of powerful scopes in healthcare.
First, health records can be stored securely in a ledger on which all participants (health professionals, patients, insurers) can rely. Second, validated data has the potential to be shared to facilitate fast and efficient transactions. Forward-thinking countries like Estonia are already turning these ideas into reality. In 2015, over 80,000 medical certificates were forwarded electronically to its Road Administration Agency to facilitate driving licence renewals. And in 2016 the country signed a joint declaration with Finland looking at automatic cross-border data exchange for social insurance benefits and digital prescriptions.
Estonia is known as one of the most digitally advanced countries in EU. The technology developed by the Estonians is also being used by NATO, U.S. Department of Defence, as well as European Union information systems to ensure cyber security.
In Estonia, patients own their health data and hospitals have made this available online since 2008. Each person in Estonia that has visited a doctor has his or her own online e-Health record, as well as a full log-file tracking access to the data.
Therefore, doctors can access their patient’s electronic records, no matter where they are and make better informed treatment decisions.
Although the healthcare on the blockchain is not only state initiatives, but the initiatives of private individuals and businessman who use modern technology to make the world a better place. For example, the WELL platform.
“Estonia is leading the way in the blockchain revolution. This country is showing an example of a wise social innovation work of the government. The WELL company is an international platform will participate in such society changing projects. Our aim is to partnership with digitally advanced countries. Healthcare must have no borders and be accessible at any place at any time,” — said Ildar Fazulyanov, founder of WELL.
After a great deal of research and planning with some of the best minds in the fields of medical care and fintech, WELL is building the decentralized global marketplace for healthcare, using blockchain technology to eliminate borders and directly connect healthcare specialists and patients around the globe via telemedicine.
