The Best 10 Tweets Celebrating The 10th Anniversary Of Bitcoin’s Genesis Block

On January 3, 2009, Satoshi Nakamoto mined the first block of Bitcoin, which became known as the genesis block. This would spark an international drive to develop blockchain, and ten years later, the number of cryptocurrency projects has proliferated across every corner of the internet. While it feels like blockchain still has a long way to go, it’s worth remembering exactly how far it’s come in the past decade.

With that in mind, we’d like to highlight a few insightful, interesting, or just plain cool responses to Bitcoin’s anniversary on Twitter -- a social media platform just a few years older than Bitcoin itself:

1. Block #0

At 6:15 pm on January 3, 2009, the first Bitcoin block was mined to generate an output of 50 BTC. This summary of “Block #0” from the Blockchain Wallet shows its digital characteristics. (Note the displayed link under “Previous Block” for confirmation.) It may have been the first, but it certainly wasn’t the last…

2. Bitcoin anniversary artwork

The first decade of blockchain has prompted some Twitter users to share original art commemorating the event! Here are a few of our favorite designs featured by @angie_elfin, @ecxx_Official, and a Tron/BitTorrent wallpaper (via @MrGordon_Ldn_UK).

3. Looking ahead to a cryptocurrency boom

2018 was a hard year for cryptocurrency, but it was heartening to see so many investors, financial experts, and news sites predicting a Bitcoin boom in the years ahead. As the cited article notes, it wasn’t long ago that a humble $30 of BTC increased in value to $38 million. Let’s see where 2019 takes us!

4. Bitcoin turns 10, weighs 104 MB

It seems that on Bitcoin’s anniversary, BSV mined a 103.8 MB block. Considering that a mere six months ago, the platform struggled with 20 MB blocks, this is quite an impressive feat of optimization. It’s also an important development for projects attempting to reimagine Bitcoin at a larger scale. Who knows where it will go from here?

5. Using the anniversary to show off a RaspiBlitz

In the decade since Bitcoin launched, we’ve seen all kinds of devices acting as Lightning Network Nodes. So far, the RaspiBlitz is one of the quickest to set up, maintains a strong retro aesthetic, and currently supports both Bitcoin and Litecoin. It’s encouraging to see crypto communities embrace varied hardware with such enthusiasm!
