Conceptual Model

Augur is a Decentralized Prediction Market Platform, built on Blockchain technology.Prediction markets allow users to buy and sell shares in the outcome of an event. The current market price of a share is an estimate of the probability of an event occurring. To gain this large audience, Augur is built on Ethereum, a decentralized blockchain network similar to the Bitcoin network. Utilizing this technology, our markets can effectively eliminate counterparty risk and centralized servers while creating a global market by employing cryptocurrencies such as bitcoin.

Project Description

Augur is building a decentralised prediction market with its token REP. REP (Reputation) can be thought of as a sort of “score” attached to an individual’s public and private address and is both divisible and exchangeable like bitcoin. However, that is where the similarities to cryptocurrency end. REP has a fixed supply of 11 million and can not be mined. Those who hold REP are expected, in regular installments, to report on the outcome of a random selection of closed events/predictions in the system. Reporters have a time limit in which to do this. Augur expects each reporting session to initially be quite quick, but may take as much as an hour as Augur grows in popularity.Augur's ICO lasted 45 days. The ICO token supply represents 80% of the total token supply, so there was a total of 8,800,000 tokens available at the offering. The crowdsale raised a total of $5.1 Million from 2,744 accounts with an average purchase of 7.639293 BTC (or US$1854 at the time) and 3782.545482 ETH (or US$2420 at the time). The ETH distribution was considerably more concentrated than the BTC distribution with the largest account contributing 252000 ETH (21.9% of the ETH raised). Augur sold 13,500BTC at an average price of $227 in an effort to hedge the risk of BTC price movements.Sale termsTeam:Jack Peterson: Lead Developer, Co-Founder. Marketing Blockchain & Ethereum dApps: Tony Sakich of Augur

Tony Sakich of Augur talks about marketing decentralized applications and the strategies needed to raise $5.2 Million Dollars in a crowdsale.Augur is an open source decentralized prediction market platform built on blockchain technology similar to Bitcoin called Ethereum.

This talk was given to a mostly beginner audience at Oakland University in Rochester, Michigan on November 17th, 2015. Tony introduces blockchain technology and the Ethereum platform, his background and past successes in the decentralized technology space, the most essential communities used to promote Augur and the future of the industry. Just as a note, Tony's original goal was to give this talk at the devcon1 conference in London, as he was unable to attend, this speech covers much of what he planned to talk about there but also includes some discussion introducing the technology and concepts to the audience as this was presented due to an invitation on behalf of OU's American Marketing Association chapter.

Tony's goal in this talk was to help other dApps in development with marketing as he feels that it is an area where projects and companies in the bitcoin and blockchain space have had weaknesses in the past. He hopes to give a similar, but more detailed presentation that further details the strategies and tools that most helped in Augur's ability to have one of the top 25 highest funded crowdfunding campaigns in history.
